For people who would like to do more gardening but live in a short growing season area, a hobby greenhouse is the answer. A hobby greenhouse is not large enough to produce vegetables or flowers on a commercial basis. It will, however, give you a place for a tomato plant or two and some fresh greens even if you live in the northern regions. Greenhouse enthusiasts even have their own association, called the Hobby Greenhouse Association, which publishes a quarterly magazine. The organization also sponsers events and helps individuals connect to get help with the aspect of gardening that they are interested in, whether it’s growing cacti or saving seeds.

If you are in the market for a hobby greenhouse, there are several types on the market. The smallest type is not large enough to walk into and must be accessed from the outside. It resembles an old-fashioned phone booth made all of glass and outfitted with shelves. This type is designed to fit as many plants as possible in as small a place as possible. The shelves are made of glass to allow as much light as possible to reach plants on the lower shelves. Another inexpensive version of this sort of hobby greenhouse is shelving covered with a zippered tent of clear plastic. This sort of arrangement is great for the small-scale hobby gardener wanting a place to keep her flowers or houseplant starts.

There are a variety of designs of hobby greenhouse that are large enough to walk into but made entirely of clear glass or plastic. They are often about the same size as a small storage building. Some independent builders have started making these to sell locally. Among national brands, one of the nicest is called the “Solar Prism.” It is called this because of it’s unique construction. This hobby greenhouse is made of a single piece of durable clear plastic which is designed to work like tiny prisms side by side. They trap the rays of the sun and shoot them back into the greenhouse at all angles. For this reason, these little greenhouses are said to glow when the weather is cloudy.

Better hobby greenhouses are equipped with automatic sensors that open vents which allow ventilation and keep the interior temperatures from getting too high. These are a great labor saver, but can get expensive. Another benefit sometimes found in nicer greenhouses is a built in irrigation or misting system. Members of the Hobby Greenhouse Association, or HGA, have invented many interesting designs of greenhouses.

If gardening is your hobby, greenhouse growing will interest you. With a greenhouse, you can have the earliest tomatoes and salad greens all year. You can also start seedlings for the main garden early in the spring when outdoor temperatures would kill them. A hobby greenhouse can be a good investment.

A greenhouse is a structure with a glass or plastic roof and frequently glass or plastic walls; it heats up because incoming solar radiation from the sun warms plants, soil, and other things inside the building. The first modern greenhouses were built in Italy in the thirteenth century[4] to house the exotic plants that explorers brought back from the tropics. A modern glasshouse in RHS WisleyThe idea of growing plants in environmentally controlled areas has existed since Roman times.

When a greenhouse is said to be freestanding, this means that it can stand alone. Greenhouse kits are generally easy to put together as the parts are already pre-drilled and pre-cut. Greenhouses thus work by trapping electromagnetic radiation and preventing convection. This greenhouse design can be attached to another greenhouse or can be beautifully constructed in a garden freestanding.

Benefits:

The major advantage when you choose to purchase a greenhouse kit, many details like how to deal with humidity, ventilation and leakage have been already dealt with and considered in the pattern. Greenhouses can be used to effectively farm various plants such as flowers, fruits and even vegetables within its controlled environment wherein humidity, condensation and light are the key factors that contribute to its effectiveness.

Some equipments for greenhouse;
Preparations need to be done to install and heater and a ventilation system which could to counter the threat and make the flowers grow in the greenhouse. These power vented heaters have a blower that pushes air through the pipe and outside the structure. The most common way of supplying phosphorus is through phosphoric acid or super phosphate. Electric heaters can efficiently maintain specified temperature levels.

Tips for management of a greenhouse garden:

1. You greenhouse design should have enough room for tall plants and plants should only use half up to two-thirds of your greenhouse area and the rest is reserved for benches and your work area.
2. You can ask your nearby greenhouse store to check out your needed output range based on the area of your greenhouse and other factors.
3. Before choosing and buying a greenhouse kit, it is important to consider a number of factors in order to be able to select the ideal kit.
4. You can also ask advice from experts in building and maintaining greenhouses for better results.
5. Since it is separated, it is important to take note of the lighting, electrical, water supply to be installed within the greenhouse.

Building greenhouse garden:

The size of greenhouses also varies depending on the purpose of the structure. The first is draw the design then go to a supplier who can do that or go directly to the contractor to make a drawing then have it made. Assembly can be done in under an hour plus no tools are required to put together a portable greenhouse.

Fertilizer:

One of the most important factors in maintaining crops inside a greenhouse is fertilization. Calcium Nitrate in Greenhouse Grade may be used in large scale growing. The frequency of the application of fertilizers can influence the growth of the plants as well. Any pre-mixed or ready mixture of fertilizer for the kind of plants that you grow is acceptable; for most flowering and foliar plants. Plants need calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum and chloride.

Portable Greenhouse:

Portable greenhouses, just like the traditional ones, trap heat coming from the sun during the day through its covering and keep the heat radiated by the soil during the night to keep the surroundings warm enough for the plants. A portable greenhouse is ideal for early planting of seeds, protecting the tender plants from the cold climate, starting perennial seeds in summer, fast rooting because of the need to transplant, and growing different kinds of plants that are not commonly grown in the area. Scientists have discovered that it is only when this is diffused into the water system that the roots of the crops consume it making it grow.

If you are planning to sell plants grown in your greenhouse, annuals and many of the biennials and perennials can be grown in and sold directly from 2-, 3-, or 4-inch pots, or started in flats and grown on in pots. Grown and sold in pots (and especially in the organic pots) plants suffer little or no setback when transplanted to the garden, terrace, or window box.

The busy gardener appreciates the fact that he doesn’t have to plant potted plants immediately. Unlike flatted plants, which tend to grow into a jungle, individually potted plants can be kept for some time in a sheltered area as under shrubs or on a shady porch.

For the Window Box, Hanging Basket, or Outdoor Planter

The popularity of hanging baskets, outdoor planter boxes, and window boxes makes it necessary that you should know a little about the type of plants your customers will want to purchase for use in these garden “areas.” Almost any of the small vines, or trailers – hoya, wandering Jew, trailing petunias, begonias, and ivy geranium – will do beautifully. The upright geraniums often are depended upon to furnish the bulk of bloom for both types of planters. Most of the small bedding plants also are good. Here are four very popular plants which can be easily grown and sold.
Asparagus Fern (Asparagus plumosus). These can be grown from seed but the seedlings are the victims of so many insect pests that it is better to purchase small plants in February and grow them on in the warm house for spring and early summer sales.

Feathery green trailing growth, plus small white flowers which often produce small red fruits, make this a froth of green for the window box or planter. Here it is seldom bothered with pests unless the season is exceptionally hot and dry, then it may become infested with red spider.

If you have old plants left over, you can divide them with a sharp knife, potting up the pieces of long white tubers and foliage in 4-inch pots of greenhouse soil. They also make wonderful hanging basket plants for the patio or greenhouse.

Begonia

Nearly everyone knows the little wax begonia (B. semper-florens), with its shiny leaves and white, pink, or red flowers. You can purchase a large plant of the wax begonia and propagate most of your own stock through cuttings grown in the warm house, buy small potted plants for retail, or grow these fibrous-rooted begonias from seed. The procedure from seed is like that for most house plants.

Equally good for window boxes are the hanging basket types of tuberous-rooted begonias. The single or double flowers range from white and yellow through pink, salmon, and red.

Heliotrope

The dwarf form of heliotrope, with its heads of blue or white flowers, makes a wonderful plant for window box or planter (and is fine also for bedding or as an accent plant).

Heliotrope is easily grown from cuttings taken in the fall. These are sold in pots the following spring. Grow the cuttings in any medium you prefer, in a warm house. As soon as they are well rooted you can plant them in 3-inch pots of greenhouse soil. When the plants reach the height you want, cut out the top so the plant will branch.

Umbrella Plant (Cyperus alternifolius)

Green umbrella-like growth makes this plant most attractive. For your first year’s sales, obtain small plants and sell them retail. If you have leftovers you may want to grow one or two for specimen greenhouse or house plants. Transplant them to a size larger pot.
You can propagate these by sowing seeds in a propagating case, giving them plenty of moisture and bottom (cable) heat of about 70 degrees, or through root divisions of the older plants, taken in March, and handled just like the seeds.

Now you know the basics, have fun gardening and reaping the profits.

It’s often thought that only those who are lucky enough to be the owner of a spacious garden can own a greenhouse however this doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. OK, yes, it does help to have an ample sized garden but if you’re garden is on the smaller size there is still hope for you. This is because greenhouses now come in all different shapes and sizes and there are many available which are portable. However there are obviously a number of things you should consider before buying the first portable greenhouse you see.

First of all you need to realize that portable greenhouses do not come in just one single size; they are available in different sizes and shapes. Before making your purchase, make sure you have decided what size of greenhouse you require as there is no point in buying something larger than need. However you also don’t want to end up buying a portable green-house which is too small either because you’ll only want to go out and replace it. You might think that this is just common sense but there are many people who don’t think things through beforehand. If you see a greenhouse reduced in price make sure you wait until you know what size you need before you buy it on impulse.

Not only are there different sizes of green house but there are also different features that can come with them such as heating and lighting. Make sure you fully understand what features your greenhouse comes with and what it doesn’t as you don’t want to end up disappointed. Think carefully about what you think you would make use of.

One of the things that makes portable greenhouses so attractive from a practical perspective is that you only need to have them erected where and when needed. When you don’t need your greenhouse during the winter months simply store it away in a shed. If you think you will be storing away your greenhouse, make sure you buy one which is easy to dismantle and assemble.

Another reason for storing your portable green-house away during the winter is that this allows you to protect it whilst there is bad weather such as wind and snow. Greenhouses are very susceptible to damage during bad weather conditions so keeping it stored away should extend the life of it. As you can see there are so many reasons why you would want to buy a portable green-house, you will certainly be very pleased with it.

I had initially cherished to build a post and beam barn, but chickened out at the last minute of arc.

Perhaps you are not particularly interested in making money from selling potted plants, bulbs, or seeds. Still, you want a self-supporting or profit-making greenhouse. A number of hybridizers use their greenhouses to hasten the growth of many plants, including iris, hemerocallis, and roses. Others devote their houses to the breeding of dahlias. Others find a greenhouse ideal for promoting the growth of herbs or grow plants to be planted later into dish gardens.

If you don’t sell all of the annuals started in your greenhouse, why not set them out in the garden and grow them for cut flowers? Leftover tomato plants can also be handled profitably. A roadside proprietor near us sets his in neat rows out in the garden. When the tomatoes ripen he puts up this sign:

Tomatoes-Vine Ripened
YOU PICK ‘EM — 50 cents per bushel

With no more work than the original planting, and some weeding and watering, this grower realizes hundreds of dollars every season from materials which otherwise he might discard.

Here are two ideas for you to turn a profit from your greenhouse.

Herbs and other specialty plants also have a good profit potential. Herbs are excellent profit-makers for the roadside stand or to sell directly from your greenhouse from flats or pots, from the hotbed, as packets of seed, or dried in bunches.

Among the many varieties you can sell are anise, sage, thyme, caraway, chives, dill, lavender, mint, and tarragon.

Sow in flats of light soil. Give good light, a temperature of 60 to 70 degrees, and within a few weeks seedlings will be ready to be transplanted into individual 2-inch pots, from which you may be able to sell them directly. If not, shift into 4-inch pots as growth dictates.

Herbs can also be transplanted to the garden, grown to sizable stock, clipped, and dried for selling. It is a good idea to slip a tag on each bunch, giving its name and some of its uses.

DISH GARDENS

If you plan a retail business – no matter how small – you will want to feature some dish gardens. Perhaps you have a friend who designs interesting and colorful ceramic bowls. If so, why not team up with her? She’ll earn money from the sale of the bowl, and you will earn some from the sale of the plants, as well as from planning and planting the tiny garden.

Landscape schemes for dish gardens are plentiful. Use material of a size to suit the container. Also, be sure to use compatible plants, that is, those which thrive under the same general conditions. Remember – most of these little gardens will go into homes where they will lack the special care you have given them.

Saxifraga, the strawberry begonia, baby tears (Helxine), small-leaved ivy, or plectranthus, are all nice to trail over the edge of a dish. Succulents, wax begonia, pilea, echeveria, kalanchoe, peperomia, and bromeliads are some of the accent materials I have used in dish gardens.

Since the dish is without drainage outlet, place pebbles and charcoal in the bottom, then add the right type of soil for the plants you are using. If you carry a line of figurines in your shop, you may be able to sell more of them by including them in the dish garden.

Seeds of royal poinciana germinate in a few days and within a matter of 2 to 3 weeks make enchanting trees for dish gardens.

The price you charge for your dish garden will, of course, depend on the type of materials and accessories you use. A friend of mine made several hundred dollars from the sale of succulents planted in gilded, individual aluminum-foil pie pans. Each planting had a “clinker” from the furnace to add interest at the base.
This was touched lightly with green, red, and bronze paint. Three tiny sedums of varied height made up the living material. This man sold these dish gardens at the wholesale price of 39 cents each; they retailed for more than twice that amount.

A greenhouse should provide all the important aspects in gardening. Many people take importance of the need to nurture and develop healthy plants in all sorts of climate conditions. Greenhouses are very important in providing necessary methodical ways to grow and develop plants in a more conventional and easy way. Plants can grow larger and quicker than their usual growth in normal agricultural methods of gardening.

The traditional methods seem to supply less production and allow a farmer or a gardener to spend much of his time in laborious work and consume effort in tending to the various needs of growing his crop and plants. A farmer may encounter some inconveniences in the changing climate conditions that may occur unexpectedly, leaving him with no choice but to let the crop find its own way to survive. There are certain plants and crops that only live in a specific season of the year.

Greenhouses help gardeners to grow plants regardless of the season. Greenhouses are built with well-planned internal systems that will provide the necessary aspects for a plant to continue its life process. There are installed heating systems and humidifying systems that will supply the exact amount of heat needed to warm and light the plants during winter season where sunlight is limited.

Sunlight is very essential for a plant to grow and develop. It is where it allows its solar radiation to produce the photosynthetic reaction needed by the leaves and stems of the plant. This process is very essential in supplying the needed chlorophyll by the plants to grow healthier and larger.

However, too much exposure is not that good as well to some plants. Greenhouses must also be structured with proper shading and coverings to allow only the needed solar radiation. A good ventilation system is also required to have a good circulation of air that will react to the needed humidity and cooling in seasons where too much external heat affects the humidity inside the greenhouse.

Many gardeners nowadays build their greenhouses with proper greenhouse accessories that will supply them the needed functionality to have a well-balanced environment. It is necessary to set up some basic supplies that will attend to the need of producing healthier and larger plants. Some supplies instantly help a gardener to calculate the temperature such as the thermal measuring system that sets up the needed temperature to heat and cool the plants depending on the type of internal climate.

Rainwater systems are also important to have a well-distributed water flow in the greenhouse. He may collect water from the downspouts and gutters of the greenhouses, which is considered ecologically friendly instead of installing automated water system that can be installed with set timers and metered watering systems that irrigates the plants in specific intervals according to the set time to water the plants.

Some people also accessorized using modernized potting benches and tools, which are very helpful every time a gardener attends to his plants. He may have the luxury of placing his tools with the proper designated places where a gardener feels comfortable and allow him to work conveniently in sowing and cultivating the soil. Potting benches are mostly featured with trays and holders serving as storage whenever a tool is not in use.

Greenhouses are structured and are sometimes attached to the house where all the basic supplies are all provided in the systems of the house. In this way, all materials and basic needs are supplied directly into the house such as water, electricity, shadings and coverings. However, many people have more pleasure in freestanding greenhouses where they spend much of their time in enjoying and relaxing while tending to their plants.

In some cases, greenhouses are hydroponically oriented where the use of organic chemical materials is supplied on their plants. This method is vastly accepted all over the country. This method is basically conventional because a gardener may not need the use of soil in his gardening.

He may save more space and time in cultivating and potting his plants. The liquid solution is fed the roots of the plants allowing the roots to accept and distribute the needed nutrients to the fast growth of the plants. It also helps a farmer in increasing his production using this kind of method.

Now is the time to build a greenhouse — a quality homemade greenhouse. Start growing vegetables year round and free yourself from the ever rising cost of produce. That’s exactly what I have done.

A quality homemade greenhouse isn’t difficult or expensive to build — I’ve constructed three different designs with no previous experience. All are well built metal and wood structures that will last a lifetime. If you are serious about growing vegetables and you want to save money, then you should seriously consider building a quality homemade greenhouse.

Here is how I built my second homemade greenhouse. It started as a large patch of weed infested ground, and now it’s a nice strong hot house that serves me year round. The idea was to create two 3 foot wide by 36 foot long raised beds with a sunken walkway in between. A metal and wood frame greenhouse would then be built on top.

I dug it. The first steps of the process involved creating the sunken walkway that would run between the large raised beds. This was done with a backhoe and skidsteer. The backhoe dug out most of the walkway, and the skidsteer was used to do the final digging and smooth out the floor of the walkway so it would be level for the walls of the raised bed.

The walkway was dug plenty deep, about 5 feet, to allow for high walls and a deep bed of sand to cover the walkway. It also had to be excavated a little bit wide so the walls could be installed and lined with corrugated metal to keep the power poles from touching the soil in the raised bed. Outside and end walls were also constructed in a similar manner.

The upper story. The basic design of the greenhouse is similar to a single car garage. The walls are vertical and 5 feet tall. The roof is 10 feet from eave to ridge with a 45 degree pitch to capture light and shed snow. Metal tubing is used for the walls and rafters, with 90 degree EMT conduit elbows used at the ridge to connect the rafters. Metal tubing is also used to create purlins, angle bracing for the walls, and diagonal bracing across the structure.

Chain link top rail serves as the primary metal tubing for construction. It is light, easy to work with, inexpensive and readily available at the local home improvement store. Chain link fencing end clamps are used extensively to fasten together walls, top plates and rafters. Walls are secured to the power pole foundation by drilling holes and pinning them in place with lag screws. Diagonal bracing is secured to the power pole foundation with large spikes.

The ends of the building are constructed from 2 by 4 lumber painted white. Vents and an exhaust fan are installed, both controlled by a single temperature switch. The building is covered with woven ripstop poly in three pieces. One piece for each end, and a single piece that covers the walls and roof. The poly is stapled to the wood ends, and held in place across the structure by plastic lath and self-tapping screws.

Note: this project required 2 people and heavy equipment because of its size and the heavy materials used in construction of the base. If you build something similar without heavy equipment, you can limit the challenges by choosing lighter materials like railroad ties at 80 pounds a piece, making the beds shorter, and making the sunken walkway more shallow.

The finished greenhouse is now in full production. In the summer we grow two dozen summer and winter squash plants, and about 20 cucumber plants. In the winter we grow kale, broccoli and Brussels sprouts, about 8 plants each. All of the resident vegetables seem to enjoy the warmth that the enclosure provides, and the high winds out here on the prairie don’t have a chance of drying out our precious crops.

Clair Schwan is an experienced vegetable gardener and has constructed 3 homemade greenhouses from local building materials. He has eliminated the high cost of produce by growing it himself. As part of his frugal and self-reliant lifestyle, he grows over 100 varieties of fruits and vegetables, and extends his vegetable gardening season to a year round adventure.

By Clair Schwan

Build your own greenhouse? Yes, and it isn’t difficult or expensive. If you are serious about your gardening, then you should consider building a greenhouse.

I was led to build a greenhouse to eliminate the high cost of produce. I just couldn’t see paying a few dollars a pound for something that I could easily grow myself. Our weather here in Wyoming is challenging, so a greenhouse was the answer. I also wanted to save money on the project, so a homemade greenhouse was my solution.

It is a satisfying adventure to build your own greenhouse. All it takes is a little imagination, some planning, a little investment in time and money, and basic handyman skills and tools. Your enthusiasm for gardening will carry you the rest of the way to success.

I know you can build one, because I built three with no previous experience. Here is how I built my first. It was an old under-utilized shed that is now a nice productive greenhouse for vegetables.

Starting with a dirty and dusty building that was assembled from scrap materials, I assessed its worthiness as a greenhouse. It had a dirt floor, so I didn’t need to tear that out. It had a nice southern exposure, so that was good. It had electricity and water inside, so the essentials were there.

Time to demolish — carefully that is. The demolition involved the following key steps:

Removed the wall sheathing

Peeled off the roof sheathing

Removed nails, screws and other hardware from the wood frame

Dug out the rolled roofing material that was placed as a covering on the dirt floor

The north wall sheathing and a narrow part of the roof in the middle of the building on the north side were left in place. The north wall provided the building with added rigidity and didn’t affect the light gathering ability of the structure. The narrow roof area allowed me easy access to the top vent and ridge of the building.

After a little testing and assessment, I knew that the building needed bracing. Here is what I did:

Installed cross bracing on the three walls with no sheathing

Nailed sheer wall in place on the north wall

Built three diagonal braces in the mid-section of the building

Replaced two joists because they were cracked

Reinforced every rafter with plywood gussets at the peak

Tied the diagonal braces into the gussets, joists and sole plate

Framed in for a large access door, vent and power exhaust fan

Built and hung a large access door

Now that my structure was sound, I had surface prep to do. This included:

Power washing the old wood to remove age old gunk

Sanding smooth every surface that would have the greenhouse plastic glazing touching it

Sealing the wood frame with a white water-based sealant

Painting the structure with several coats of bright white water-based paint

After all that work, I was ready to take the final steps of the project to bring my greenhouse to life. These steps included: stapling on the woven ripstop poly covering; installing the power exhaust fan, power vent and thermostat controllers; wiring everything to the electrical supply; creating and filling raised beds for planting; and, spreading a thick layer of sand on the floor for a clean and comfortable work environment.

Now the greenhouse is in full production growing vegetables. Peas, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, Swiss chard, eggplant and herbs enjoy the warm and moist environment. They are protected from wind, hail and driving rain, and are producing very well — much better than they ever would outside in our drying winds.

Best of all, on a cold sunny winter day, we head for the greenhouse, sit back in our easy chairs and wiggle our toes in the sand. We have a warm tropical paradise on the high plains outside of Cheyenne — and it keeps us well fed.

Clair Schwan is an experienced vegetable gardener and has constructed 3 handsome greenhouses from local building materials. He has eliminated the high cost of produce by growing it himself. As part of his frugal and self-reliant lifestyle, he grows over 100 varieties of fruits and vegetables, and extends his vegetable gardening season to a year round adventure.
